The Office Magazine article on the Office XP Web Services Toolkit is finished. At first I had trouble putting my mind to the writing, but as I got going it got longer and longer. The article discusses the XML Web Services protocol stack and explains all about how Web Services are pieces of software that exchange messages. It also shows how to use the toolkit to consume Web Services in Office XP applications and documents.
The demo’s that I used were:
- Babelfish Service: translate selected piece of text in Word into another language, that you pick from a UserDialog (and what do you know: the service is down at the moment. Shucks!)
- Euro Convertor Service: demonstrate creating Excel functions that use a Web Service in calculations
I also used the Google service to fill a slide in PowerPoint with the top 5 search results on the title of the slide whenever it was displayed. Didn’t put it in the article. I also thought of showing custom graphics from a weather service or something. Anyone have any nice ideas for using Web Services in Office?
The article will be in the next issue of Office Magazine and should reach stores at the end of December.
